Essential Tips for Family Travel in Phuket

[Updated Feb 2023] Making a family trip to Phuket with young children in tow? We bring you eight essential travel tips!

8 Essential Phuket Family Travel Tips

1. Do not rent tuk tuk’s for long distance trips or by the hour.

Instead, just use tuk tuk’s for short journeys, as the tuk tuk is open-air so the family will be exposed to the fumes. There are also no seatbelts on a tuk-tuk, which still poses a safety threat despite the slow pace that tuk tuk’s drive at.

2. Sunblock is a must-have

Sun protection for young children is very important in the tropical sun, so be sure to apply sunscreen frequently in order to avoid sun damage. It is recommended that you keep your children in the shade and out of the direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm when the sun is strongest.

3. If you forget anything that your child needs during your holiday, do not panic!

There are a number of shops where you can purchase the things you forgot. There is a Robinson department store and a Central Festival Mall, which has a wide range of goods you may need, and to international standards.

4. Still, be prepared and pack all the necessities

Despite there being such large department stores, there is a lack of Western baby supplies in Thailand in general. Canned baby food is not a common household product amongst Thai families, so this will seldom be found amongst the shelves. Although there is baby formula and disposable nappies available in the stores, it is recommended that you bring your own, as there may not be brands that you recognise.

5. Pack for warm and sunny weather

When packing, make sure to pack a lot of light cotton clothes in order to ensure maximum comfort in the tropical heat. Crocs and sandals are suitable for your children, and it would be best if your children wore their shoes whilst walking along the beach because there may be sharp seashells and hot sand. Pack light, as you will find that most of the time will be spent in swimwear. However, if you are on a long haul flight to Thailand, be sure to pack a jumper, as the plane cabin may get chilly.

6. Do not allow your children to climb any statues of the Buddha.

The locals will find this offensive and disrespectful of their culture. If you intend to visit a temple, be sure to wear long sleeves and a long skirt or pants with closed shoes.

7. Bring your own beach toys

The selection of beach toys in Phuket is not that great, and will also tend to be very expensive along the beach. It is advised that you bring your own toys for your children.

8. Get your vaccines updated

Consult your family doctor about four to six weeks before your vacation to check on the types of vaccinations suitable for you and your family members. The following vaccinations are recommended by Phuket International Hospital: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, tetanus-diphtheria booster (if required), measles booster (if required) and polio.

Family Health Tips in Phuket

Phuket has many pharmacies, either attached to hospitals or scattered throughout the community, and these pharmacies stock an impressive range of medications. By law, all pharmacies should be under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist, and the importation and manufacturing of medications is regulated by the Ministry of Health.
